Every Day is a Day of Thanksgiving!
“Thanksgiving isn’t just a day. It’s a way we can live our lives every day.”
- Katrina Mayer
As we entered the period of the season that led up to Thanksgiving, it was interesting to note the intentionality with which society focused upon being thankful. One particular point of focus involved individuals utilizing each day in the month of November to express and denote things for which they were thankful. Another effort involved deliberately moving away from any type of negative speech and speaking only of that which is positive as a sign of gratitude to God for all of His blessings.
While I find each of those gestures to be noble in their intent and certainly helpful in leveling our focus toward gratitude to our Heavenly Father, I must contend that every day should be a day of Thanksgiving. We don’t have to wait until the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas to be reflective on the goodness of God because there is an opportunity to extend our gratitude to Him daily. Each day that we wake up presents us with a fresh occasion to thank Him for our blessings and the mercies He bestows upon us anew daily.
The reason many of us neglect the duty of daily gratitude is not necessarily because we are ungrateful, but rather, we have normalized His abundant grace and goodness toward as a result of His overwhelming faithfulness. In other words, we’ve become so familiar with His goodness that we just expect it with little regard for how blessed we are to receive it. We must constantly be on guard against this attitude that takes His goodness and faithfulness for granted.
Consider the person who unexpectedly woke up to chaos and disaster in their lives. That person would certainly regard your seemingly mundane situation as an abundance of blessings worthy of praise and adoration to the Father. Have you been watching the news lately? Tragedies are commonplace, yet God in all of His goodness has sustained and blessed you. While you may not have everything that you would like in life a quick survey of your surroundings should remind you that it could be much worse.
The moment our eyes open from the prior night’s sleep we are immediately confronted with His grace extended toward us. The appropriate response to that grace and goodness is thankfulness. Every day will present an opportunity to be thankful. I challenge you to meet that opportunity head on with a response suitable for a faithful God, which is thankfulness. Indeed every day is a day of Thanksgiving.
